Fashion Photographer - How to use natural light to get 2 different lighting styles

I chose the iconic Joshua Tree National Park, California for a fashion photoshoot as it looked like a photographers dream. With the blue skies contrasting against the desert sand. With miles of landscape full of catcus and interesting shaped trees, it makes for an amazing backdrop for a fashion photoshoot with a model.

Jana Canela from LA models was the muse that suited the style of the shoot. The gypsy styling, and made the dream come to life with her gorgeous presence and her look of perfection. We used a mixture of clothing and accessories from thrift stores in Los Angeles and pieces from Lenni The Label.

After driving from L.A we set up hair on make up on location and started the photoshoot at 3pm. At the time the sun was still high.

  1. The way to do this is to turn your model into the sun, high contrast images against the blue sky.
  2. Backlighting - Soft light, blown out sky and softer lighting on models faces. Lens flare,

After the photo shoot, during golden hour. I decided to shoot some video too, as the outfits were flowy which was good movement in order to show off the garments.

The Photography Gear I used Canon 5DM3 with Canon 85mm F/1.2L which is perfect for creative portraits, and Canon 50mm 1.4.
